New Chairman of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)

• Dr Ajay Kumar has been appointed as the new chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
• The appointment was made by President Draupadi Murmu.
• He is a retired IAS officer of the 1985 batch of Kerala cadre.
• Dr Kumar was earlier serving as Defence Secretary from August 2019 to October 2022.
• His appointment comes after former UPSC chairperson Preeti Sudan retired on April 29.
• The Department of Personnel and Training issued the appointment order.
• The order was made under Article 316(1) of the Indian Constitution.
• His tenure will continue till October 2027.
