National Anti Terrorism Day 2025

  • National Anti-Terrorism Day is observed every year on 21 May to commemorate the assassination of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on 21 May 1991.
  • Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber of LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) in Sriperumbudur near Chennai.
  • Rajiv Gandhi took over as Prime Minister after the assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi on 31 October 1984.
  • In 1987, Rajiv Gandhi sent the Indian Peace Keeping Force to Sri Lanka to establish peace.
  • National Anti-Terrorism Day is observed to raise awareness about the serious consequences of terrorism and the importance of maintaining peace, unity and security.
