  • Michigan-based otolaryngologist Dr Srinivas Mukkamala has been elected the 180th president of the American Medical Association (AMA).


  • He became the first Indian-origin person to hold the top post in the AMA, the largest body of physicians in the US.
  • His election was announced during the AMA annual meeting in Chicago, where he described the moment as humbling and inspiring.
  • Mukkamala, who was battling brain tumour recently, underwent a successful surgery that removed 90% of the 8 cm tumour.


  • He explained how his personal health crisis deepened his commitment to better healthcare access in the US.
