First National Cooperative University in India

  • The foundation stone of the first national cooperative university in India has been laid in Anand, Gujarat. The name of this university is Tribhuvan Cooperative University (TSU).

About Tribhuvan Cooperative University (TSU)


Naming: This university is named after Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel, one of the leaders of the cooperative movement in India, who played an important role in laying the foundation of Amul.


Objective: The main objective of TSU is to prepare professional and trained manpower to meet the growing needs of the cooperative sector. It will provide specialized education, training and research opportunities in areas such as cooperative management, finance, law and rural development.


Cost and area: This university will be built on 125 acres of land at a cost of Rs 500 crore.


Establishment: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah laid its foundation stone on July 5, 2025.


Significance: This university will bring transparency in the cooperative sector by eliminating nepotism and will provide employment opportunities only to trained people. Besides, it will also promote research and development, thereby strengthening the cooperative movement.
