Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U), is the world's largest urban sanitation survey.
This is its 9th edition, and its main objective is to encourage large-scale citizen participation in cities and towns and create awareness about the importance of making them better places to live.
Key Objectives and Components:
Citizen Participation: Engaging citizens on a large scale in sanitation activities.
Awareness: Increasing awareness about the importance of making cities and towns clean and livable.
Data Evaluation: Evaluating cities based on data provided by Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), document assessment, and field assessments.
Theme: This year's Swachh Survekshan theme is "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle."
Evaluation Criteria: 10 well-defined parameters and 54 indicators have been used to assess urban cleanliness and service delivery.
Population Categories: For the first time, cities have been categorized into five population-based categories:
Very Small Cities: < 20,000 population
Small Cities: 20,000 – 50,000 population
Medium Cities: 50,000 – 3 lakh population
Large Cities: 3 – 10 lakh population
Million-Plus Cities: > 10 lakh population Each category was evaluated using parameters tailored to its specific needs.
Awards and Results:
Awards: A total of 78 awards have been presented this year, offering a comprehensive view of sanitation and waste management in cities.
Top Performing Cities:
Indore: Became India's cleanest city for the 8th consecutive time.
Surat: Ranked second.
Navi Mumbai: Ranked third.
Lucknow: Ranked third among cities with a population of over 10 lakh.
Kanpur: Ranked 13th in the country and 5th cleanest city in Uttar Pradesh in the 10 lakh population category.
Agra: Ranked 10th in the country and 2nd cleanest city in Uttar Pradesh.
Jamshedpur: Secured the third position among clean cities with a population of 3-10 lakh.
Kharar (Punjab): Declared the best city in the country based on Citizens' Feedback.
Special Categories: Awards were also given in special categories like Ganga Cities, Cantonment Boards, Safai Mitra Suraksha, and Mahakumbh. Uttar Pradesh was honored with the Swachh Mahakumbh 2025 Award for its innovative and sustainable sanitation initiatives during Mahakumbh 2025.
Mentorship Program: Under the "Each One Clean One" initiative, 78 top-performing cities will adopt and guide one poorly performing city from their respective states.
