Renowned theatre maestro Ratan Thiyam passes away

  • Renowned theatre maestro and Padma Shri awardee Ratan Thiyam has passed away.
  • He was 77 years old. He died in the early hours after being admitted to RIMS Hospital in Imphal.
  • Ratan Thiyam was originally a resident of Imphal West district of Manipur.
  • He was a prominent figure in Indian theatre. He earned global fame for his impressive theatrical performances.
  • Some of his most acclaimed works include "Chakravyuh", "Uttar Priyadarshi", "Hey Nungshibi Prithvi" and "Chinglon Mpan Tampak Ama".
  • His play "Chakravyuh" won the Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh International Festival in 1987.
  • He was also the chairman of the National School of Drama.
  • He was also the vice-president of the New Delhi-based Sangeet Natak Akademi.
  • In 1989, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri Award.
  • He also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987.
