निम्नलिखितगद्यांशं पठित्वा प्रश्नाम् उत्तराणि देयानि- अस्ति विन्ध्याटव्यां महातपा नाम मुनि:। तेनैकदा उटजद्वारे काकमुखाद् भ्रष्टो मूषकशावको दृष्ट:। ततो जातकारुण्येन तेन मुनिना स नीवारकणै: परिवर्धित:। एकदा तं मूषकं खादितुमनुधावन् कश्चित् बिडालो मुनिना दृष्ट:। तदा तप:प्रभावात् तेन मुनिना मूषको बलिष्ठो बिडाल: कृत:। अथ कदाचित् कुक्कुरात् भीत: स विडाल: धावित्वा मुनि: समीपमागच्छत्। बिडालोऽयं कुक्कुरात् विभेति इत्यवगम्य असौ मुनिना कुक्कुर: कृत:। तत: प्रभृति स कुक्कुर: इतस्तत: निर्भयं भ्रमति स्म। अथैकदा व्याघ्रात् भीत: कुक्कुर: मुने: समीपमागच्छत्। कुक्कुरस्य व्याघ्रात् महत्भयम् इति मत्वा तेन स व्याघ्र: कृत:। परं व्याघ्रमपि मूषकनिर्विशेषं एव पश्यति स मुनि:। अत: सर्वेऽपि तत्रत्या: जनास्तं व्याघ्र दृष्ट्वा वदन्ति- ‘‘अनेन मुनिना मूषकोऽयं व्याघ्रतां नीत:।’’ एतच्छ्तुत्वा स: व्याघ्र: सव्यथोऽचिन्तयत्- ‘‘यावदवं मुनिर्जीवति तावदिदं मम स्वंरूपाख्यानम् अपकीर्तितम् एव स्थास्यति। ‘‘इत्थं विचिन्त्य स मुनिम् एव हन्तुम् उद्यतोऽभवत्। मुनि:तस्य दुर्मते: मनोभावम् अभीष्टं च ज्ञात्वा कमण्डलो: जलमादाय मंत्रपाठं कृत्वा तम् एवं शशाप- यस्मादेवमपापं मां पाप हिंसितुमिच्छसि। तस्मात् स्वयोनिमापन्नो मूषकस्त्वं भविष्यसि।। इत्थं शप्त्वा मुनिस्त पुनर्मूषकं चकार। मुनि: मूषकशावंक कथम् पोषितवान्?
