His father, Samuel Edison, was in the lumber and grain business. His mother Nancy was a former School teacher. Young Edison’s eccentricities were evident quite early in life. Energetic, argumentative and hard to discipline, he was promptly labeled by his teachers as difficult. But his mother Nancy had the insight to realize that her child was special and required deft handling. She took him out of school, taught him herself at home and gave him a free hand to pursue his interests. It was a very wise decision. Formal education and rigid discipline might have extinguished the spark of creativity in this gifted child, and the loss would have been the world's. Young Edison made full use of the freedom given by his mother. He eagerly devoured books on physics, chemistry, etc., but never accepted any statement without testing it out for himself. Designing and constructing gadgets by himself was an all-consuming passion with him. At the age of twelve, Edison decided it was time to face the world on his own. He began earning by selling newspapers and food in trains. He then launched a small newspaper of his own, printing it in a railway carriage. He had to give it up when a reader incensed at his gossip column threw him fully clothed into a pool of water! He, however, continued to use his railway carriage as a mini physics-and-chemistry laboratory. But this too came to an end when there was an explosion in the carriage and the railway staff dumped him, along with his Paraphernalia, at the nearest level crossing!
