Tripura is now the third fully functional literate state of India
Tripura has now become the third fully functional literate state of India.
Third State: Before Tripura, Mizoram and Goa had achieved this feat.
'ULLAS' Programme: Tripura has touched this historic milestone under the Central Government's 'ULLAS - Nav Bharat Literacy Programme'. This programme is being run from 2022 to 2027.
Literacy Rate: According to Tripura Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, the literacy rate of the state has now increased to 95.6%. In 1961, this rate was only 20.24%.
Targets and Criteria: 'Fully functional literate' means that the person can not only read, write and calculate, but also has knowledge of social awareness, vocational skills and life skills. As per the Central Government's norms, states achieving more than 95% literacy are given the status of 'fully literate'.
Significance: This achievement has been made possible by the government, volunteers and public participation. It reinforces the National Education Policy 2020's special emphasis on adult education and is a big step towards 'Developed India @2047'.
